Transforming an automated investing platform
Problem Space
M1 is a financial platform for long-term investors to manage and optimize their money in one place, helping clients build and protect their wealth with automated tools, top-flight rates, and no fees.

The unicorn startup aimed to increase total assets managed and net funding on the platform. To address this need, I led design in the Investing business unit and overhauled the user experiences across the investing platform, including traditional investing, crypto, and margin loans.

Research
In collaboration with the product and engineering teams, I established a foundation of flexible, scalable systems in order to build the next generation of LatchOS—enabling new functionality, features, and products that weren't possible before.
Landscape Audit
Competitive Analysis
We looked at how direct competitors, such as Google's Project Sunroof, appealed to their customers with data visualizations and interactive tools.
User Interviews
We also examined how indirect competitors, such as Jaguar's car configurator, encourage users to image physical products through playful visual means.
Learnings
Educate along the way
Demonstrate the value proposition of Tesla’s solar products every step along the user journey with pertinent information and data. Interactivity encourages users to engage with the offerings.
Explore without commitment
Allow users to explore and save configurations without creating an account. Separating configuration from sales recognizes that these are two important but distinct parts of the customer journey.
Clear path forward
Open many entry points across appropriate channels for users to play and ultimately convert. Ensure that call-to-actions and next steps are clear to the user.

Approach
In collaboration with the product and engineering teams, I established a foundation of flexible, scalable systems in order to build the next generation of LatchOS—enabling new functionality, features, and products that weren't possible before.
Target Audience
Digital Native
The Digital Native is a first-time or second-time home buyer. He prefers to communicate through digital platforms and is used to getting tasks done in bits and pieces over time. He will most likely use a lease or loan to pay for the solar tiles.
Practicalist
The Practicalist has owned a home before. She understands the investment opportunity that solar presents. She has seen her neighbors get solar panels and will mostly likely ask them for advice and references.

Outcomes
Within two years, we overhauled Latch’s product suite and launched a new full-building solution called LatchOS with a new design system. LatchOS received high regard from our biggest customers and stakeholders, internal and external. Latch now has foundational systems designed for efficiency, scalability, and visibility that has and will continue to allow them to evolve its brand, products, and business.
